An American man who attempted to pass off 15 kilogrammes of cocaine as Kerry Gold powdered milk and smuggle it to the United States on Monday pleaded not guilty and was remanded to prison.
Twenty-four year old Jermaine Lowe pleaded not guilty to the charge of allegedly being in possession of 15.308 kilos of cocaine on January 17 at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA), Timehri.
‘The case has been transferred the Providence Magistrates’ Court. on January 28, Customs Anti Narcotics Unit (CANU) Prosecutor, Oswald Massiah told the court, presided over by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, that the accused had planned to take the cocaine to Guyana on January 7 but that arrangement fell through.
The court was also told that one of Lowe’s associates in Beterverwagting, East Coast Demerara had offered to pay his airfare to take the cocaine to the US. Massiah said that it was while Lowe was attempting to get the narcotic through the CJIA on January 17 when security personnel spotted a suspicious object in Lowe’s suitcase.
During his four-year stay in Guyana, the court learnt that Lowe claimed that he had lost his American passport but only recently obtained a new one from the US embassy here.
