Border officers at the Lukeville crossing made a big bust this week, taking down a smuggler in a “queso” cheese trafficking. During questioning, the van’s driver ‘fessed up to carrying a load — some five keys [kilos] of cheese.
Instead of 11 pounds, however, border agriculture inspectors uncovered about 223 pounds of cheese hidden throughout the van, according to a news release from U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
“The concealed, unpasteurized ruminant cheese was seized for not meeting import requirements” the release says. The news release did not provide a value estimate for the cheese. The unidentified man was cut loose with a fine.
