CAPE CORAL: Police say they have the man who broke into a McDonald’s restaurant and tried to make off with a milkshake — after he was caught committing another beverage crime.
Sean David Hartman, 18, was stopped Friday evening while allegedly trying to take a six pack of Diet Dr. Pepper and a four-pack of Yoo Hoo from the Publix supermarket at 2420 Santa Barbara Boulevard. Hartman, who told police he stole the beverages because he was thirsty, is reportedly homeless.
“Apparently, he has a real thirst and doesn’t have the money to pay for it,” said Connie Barron of the Cape Coral Police Department. He also allegedly admitted to the crime at the McDonald’s on Cape Coral Parkway the day before.
Hartman allegedly used a handful of rocks to break the glass at the restaurant. He headed for the shake machine, he told police, but he had trouble operating it and spilled the treat everywhere.
Hartman allegedly told officers he gave up on the shake and got a Dr. Pepper instead, then ran off. Police say he returned later that morning and asked what happened to the door, then acted surprised when told there’d been a burglary.
Hartman is charged with burglary, criminal mischief and petit theft for the McDonald’s break-in, and petit theft for trying to take the drinks from Publix. “If there’s a lighter side of crime, this might be one of those examples,” Barron said.
